Performing & Visual Arts Magnet School Auditions
The Mount Vernon Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School will host auditions for students entering the sixth to ninth grade in September 2017. The auditions are at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, at Mount Vernon High School. The auditions will last approximately 2 hours.
The school is currently based at Mount Vernon High School and will move to Thornton High School in 2017 as part of Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton’s 20/20 vision. The school will add a grade each year until enrollment capacity is reached in grades 6-12. The school’s aim is to become a premiere school for the arts in Westchester County.
To be admitted for the 2017-2018 school year, students must apply, audition, provide a teacher recommendation, take a “gifted and talented” assessment test, and participate in a family interview.
The program provides focused instruction in instrumental music, dance, theater, vocal music and visual arts, similar to that of a college conservatory.
Admitted students complete intensive theoretical, historical and practical study in a specified art field, in addition to their general education requirements of New York State.
