  • District Celebrates Ribbon-Cutting of State-of-the-Art Culinary Kitchen at The Mount Vernon High School

    The Mount Vernon City School District celebrated with a ribbon cutting and cooking demonstration of its new, state-of-the-art culinary program kitchen at The Mount Vernon High School on Thursday, February 25th. Renovation and construction of the facility was funded with a $1 million capital improvement grant through New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi. The project sought to revitalize the culinary lab and program at the high school. Following the ribbon cutting, Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton, or “Chef Ham” as he was known for the evening, joined culinary students in preparing a delicious meal for those in attendance.

  • MVCSD Staff Join Judge Lauren Lake and Bestselling Author Susan L. Taylor for Interactive Panel Discussion in Honor of Black History Month

    On Wednesday, Feb. 24th, more than 100 Mount Vernon City School District faculty and staff joined Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton and his cabinet as they hosted an interactive panel discussion. The topic for the event was strategies teachers can use to help students shatter glass ceilings they may encounter and redefine how the world sees them.

  • Traphagen students pay tribute during Black History Month

    Students at Traphagen School paid tribute to Black History Month with a virtual Black Excellence Assembly on Thursday, February 25th. The informative, touching and deeply personal performance by many of the school’s students ranged from the children acting as figures of the black community and offering their background and struggles on being black in America; to a recitation of which black figures they most admired and were inspired by; to uplifting musical performances, including several by the students themselves.

  • District hosts 10th Annual Digital Learning Day with a Twist – the Students were the Teachers

    The Mount Vernon City School District hosted its 10th annual Digital Learning Day on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, with equal parts irony and surprise. The irony, of course, was provided by the coronavirus pandemic and the advent of “remote learning.” For the first time in 10 years, Digital Learning Day was, well, digital.

  • Dr. Hamilton will present cooking demonstration to commemorate grand re-opening of culinary arts program kitchen

    A Ribbon Cutting and Cooking Demonstration is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 25th at the Mount Vernon High School Culinary Arts program kitchen. Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton will host the evening and prepare some of his favorite dishes on Facebook LIVE. The public is invited to tune in to Facebook LIVE to see the new, massive kitchen used by culinary program students every day and watch Dr. Hamilton’s cooking demonstration. The celebration will commemorate the complete renovation of the culinary kitchen, which was a result of State Senator Alessandra Biaggi’s efforts to allocate $1 million in capital funding to the project from the 2019-2020 budget cycle.

  • MV Basics Magic Show scheduled for February 23rd

    The Mount Vernon City School District will host a virtual magic show - which will be interactive and features original sleight-of-hand and illusion from David Kaye. David Kaye’s magic show takes place virtually through Zoom. Under his stage name Silly Billy, he will bring personality and magical talent to the virtual magic show.   • MV athletes get COVID-19 testing on-site with Neighborhood Health Center partnership

    The Mount Vernon City School District, in partnership with the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center, tested 115 athletes for COVID-19 on Wednesday, February 17th at The Mount Vernon High School (MVHS). The district and the center will continue weekly testing performed on-site. Throughout this first day of testing, students trickled into the student cafeteria, registered for the test, and took the nose swab diagnostic test.

  • District Reports Significant Increase in Students’ ELA Proficiency Test Scores, Rising 12 Percentage Points in Five Years

    The Mount Vernon City School District continues to report record achievement in students’ academic success, as denoted by student test scores from New York State Education Department (NYSED) 2019-2020 Assessment exams. The most recent NYSED English language arts (ELA) proficiency scores for students in Grades 3-8 had increased 2 percentage points year-over-year. Furthermore, the District has reported a 12-percentage point increase in students’ proficiency rating since 2014 when Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton assumed his current position and set the course for the District’s success.

  • District Hosts Virtual National African American Parent Involvement Day for Families

    More than 1,300 parents attended the Mount Vernon City School District’s virtual National African American Parent Involvement Day on Monday, Feb. 8. The districtwide event for parents and caregivers of its students in Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) through Grade 12. This year, the event was hosted virtually through Zoom with each of the District’s 16 schools hosting its own video conference for its respective families.

  • District to Offer Free Five-Day F.A.S.T. (Focused Academic and Supplemental Teaching) Break Program for Grades 3-8 Students

    The Mount Vernon City School District recently announced plans to offer a free five-day F.A.S.T. (Focused Academic and Supplemental Teaching) Break Program for grades 3-8 students. Students will be invited to participate, and the Program will be held during the District’s midwinter recess from February 15th – 19th. The Program will be offered at no cost to students or their families, as a generous community donation will fund the Program.

    Students in the Mount Vernon City School District have continued to make record improvements, according to 2019-2020 New York State test scores. On Tuesday, February 2nd, key District administrators shared a detailed presentation at the Board of Education’s virtual meeting that highlighted student achievement trends, including ELA proficiency, mathematics scores, and graduation rates as well as the District-led strategies that have led to its success.

  • MVCSD's Athletics Reopening Safety Plan

    The Mount Vernon City School District has written and posted to its website its Athletics Safety Plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In the plan is everything from physical distancing and cleaning procedures to health screenings, communication of cases and the use of face coverings.
