NYSPHSAA Section 1 adds track and boys swimming to delayed winter sports
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Section 1 announced that boys and girls indoor track and boys swimming, considered low risk sports, were officially moved to the start of next year. The Section 1 decision effectively pushes back all winter sports to a January 4th, 2021 start. Early last week the NYSPHSAA delayed the start of high risk winter sports – wrestling, cheerleading and boys and girls basketball – to January 4th.

District Announces Dr. Jeanette Baubles as Director of Education (K-12)
The Mount Vernon City School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jeanette Baubles as the district’s Director of Education (K-12). Dr. Baubles was the Regional Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Shore Regional High School District in West Long Branch, New Jersey, from 2014 to 2020.

Y’s Men Club of Westchester County donates coats to 138 homeless
The Y’s Men Club of Westchester County, led by Mount Vernon City School District’s Director of Business & Treasurer, Shaji Zacharia, officially delivered to Vernon Plaza Family Shelter and WestHelp Shelter 138 new coats for homeless students in a small gathering of Y’s Men Club members, officials from the shelters, school district Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton and Board President Darcy Miller. The event at the Vernon Plaza shelter was held on Wednesday, November 18th.

A few pre-K 4 program seats are still available
The Mount Vernon City School District Universal Pre-K program has only a few spots remaining in its pre-kindergarten 4 program this school year. The program offers either virtual or in-person learning. The program is led by the district, which also provides devices and supplies. It is also free, meaning there is no financial burden on parents and guardians. The full-day program provides students with more instruction time, which gives them a greater opportunity for success in school. Students must be 4 years old by December 1, 2020 (no exceptions) and be residents of Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon schools begin to reopen after nine-month closure
Nine months after the Mount Vernon City School District school buildings closed their doors because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the district’s younger students began arriving to see their teachers and friends. The district started its first phase of reopening on Monday, November 16th for families who have chosen in-person instruction for its pre-K to grade 3 students.
