Pennington students and staff design hallways for Deck the Halls competition

Decorations, lights, and holiday-themed student-work are lining the hallways at Pennington, as students and teachers collaborated to deck the halls with holiday cheer this month. On Wednesday, District administrators, including Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland, visited the school to serve as judges in the “Deck the Halls" competition.

“Teachers and students came together to create designs to deck our halls here with some holiday cheer and celebrate various holidays celebrated around the world as well as specific themes related to Christmas, so it has been an amazing time,” said Pennington Principal Dr. Melissa White.

“We're having a lot of fun and we look forward to more events like this at Pennington.”

Administrators toured the building, marveling at the in-depth student work lining the walls. They were even treated to a sneak preview of Pennington’s holiday concert as the students rehearsed!

As they walked down Gingerbread Lane, Grinch Lane, Whoville and Gingerbread Wonderland – some of the names the groups chose for their displays – they noted their favorites and stopped in some classrooms to commend the teachers and students.

At the end of the tour, they selected awards for each grade-level’s area.

Best Design: Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Second Grade
Most Unique: Cohorts
Best Collaboration: Third and Sixth Grades
Best Writing Concept: Fourth and Fifth Grades
Most Culturally Responsive: Seventh and Eighth Grades
Tightest Team: First Grade and Security (who joined in on the fun with their own hallway displays!)

“School culture needs to be at the utmost for students to achieve at the highest levels,” said Dr. Strickland. “The work Pennington students and teachers put in to design their entire school signifies a very strong culture.”
