Pennington School students conjure frightful tales in 'Spooky Saga'

Fifth-graders at Pennington School recently scared up some spine-tingling tales in 100 words or less for the “Spooky Saga” nationwide writing challenge.

Nearly all participating students were selected for publication in this year’s anthology, “Spook Squad – Beyond the Tale,” and received certificates from Young Writers, the organization that hosts the contest.

Students’ work will be published pending parental permission.

The weeklong writing experience in October immersed students in the full writing process — prewriting, brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising and publishing.

While writing within such a tight word limit proved challenging, the children gained valuable insight into precise word choice and careful editing.

“Young Writers runs national creative writing contests for schools, helping to turn students’ imagination into confidence and writing skills” through engaging themes, resources and recognition, according to its website.
