Scholars at Cecil H. Parker School participate in a read-a-loud with members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
“Who’s a good reader?” asked the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. President Eddie Campbell to students in Ebony Cooper-Williams fourth grade class on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Cecil H. Parker School during their reading celebration. Students shot their hands up in excitement before diving into their read-a-loud session with members of the New Rochelle-White Plains Alumni Chapter.
“This meaningful event highlighted the importance of literacy and the joy of reading while fostering a love for books among our young learners,” said Principal Dr. Jacqueline Green. “We are grateful to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for their dedication to education and for making this day so memorable for our scholars.
The men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. visited classrooms in various grade levels to read stories of inspiration and authenticity to scholars. Some of the books included “All Because You Matter,” by Tami Charles, “The Idea of You,” by Questlove and “Meesha Makes Friends,” by Tom Percival.
“I went here; I graduated in 1980, this school is close to my heart…” said Paul Bratcher, a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. New Rochelle-White Plains Alumni Chapter. “It means a lot being here because this is where it all started for me. So, this is one way for me to give back to my community.”
In Ms. Cooper-Williams class, Mr. Campbell invited students up to the front of the class to help him read the story. Eager participants went up one-by-one to assist with reading the story out loud.
“I like that the book taught about your dream and to not let anybody ruin your dreams,” said Julian Garcia from Ms. Cooper-Williams class. “I also like that he asked people to come up and read pages. He was very nice.”
After finishing the story, members of the fraternity spoke with scholars about the messages conveyed in the books and answered any questions students might have.
