Parker preschoolers wrap up Hispanic Heritage Month with art show

Preschool scholars at Cecil H. Parker school proudly displayed their art in the gymnasium upstairs on Thursday, October 17, 2024 to commemorate the end of Hispanic Heritage Month. Throughout the month, students created various pieces of art to learn more about Latin American culture. Some of these creations included Dominican faceless dolls, Mexican folk art, Peruvian pan pipes, fancy foliages and maracas.

This unit of study during Hispanic Heritage month was ‘All About Me.’” This provided the perfect opportunity to dive in and learn about how unique and special the students are as well as what connects them to each other, such as their culture, music, food, and art. Scholars learned about various Hispanic cultures and made connections between what they learned and the traditions and practices that scholars experience at home with their families. Scholars saw themselves and their families reflected in their art, whether it be their hojalata mirrors, their Frida Kahlo inspired self-portraits, or their retablos which depicted their entire families (and more).

Following the art show, all of Mount Vernon City School District preschool and the elementary grades at Cecil H. Parker participated in a live Zoom author reading of “Soy Bella” with author Jorge Santos. Mr. Santos shared his inspiration behind writing “Soy Bella” and answered scholars' questions about the book.
