MVHS student creates picture book about the Holocaust for Living History Project
Mount Vernon High School eleventh-grade student Desirae Bailey-McCalla presented to the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center (HHREC) and the families of Holocaust survivors this Tuesday. HHREC offers this opportunity through their High School Living History Project, inviting students from high schools in Westchester to connect with families of Holocaust survivors to learn and process their narratives of history.
Desirae was paired with Helen Rubel, the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. She worked closely with Mrs. Rubel to learn the story of her family. Desirae then created a storybook, titled “Making Lemonade: When Life Gives You Lemons,” about what she had learned and presented it to Mrs. Rubel. Helen was delighted as her 9 and 10-year-old granddaughters love graphic novels, and she is excited to share the family story with them.
Congratulations to Desirae on a successful presentation! Click here to learn more about the Living History Project.
