MVHS invites colleges to speak to students for College Application Month

In celebration of College Application Month, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Mount Vernon High School held several college visit seminars for its seniors during the school day. Admissions representatives from notable colleges such as the College of Westchester, College of the Holy Cross, and Monroe College came to speak to students and give information about their programs and requirements. They also provided valuable advice on the transition between high school and college.

“What we do at Mount Vernon High School for College Acceptance Month is host a series of different schools that come and do on-site college applications and a college fair on the 11th,” said Guidance Counselor Lolita Greene. “The reason that is so important is that if students can get engaged and families can get connected early, that can make your senior year less stressful, and you’ll feel more secure ahead of time knowing where you're going. You get more time to enjoy the rest of your senior year with all the activities going on.”

Students were asked to think about their futures today and were given the space to talk about their dream careers, intended majors and goals. Cody Black, a high school and community relations presenter from the College of Westchester, presented to students and named a number of resources for them to take advantage of in college. She also told students about the college’s Jumpstart Early College program, which allows high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit for free.

“Today, I spoke to the students about the College of Westchester, some of the programs that we offer, and any of the free classes we have for students, including our Jumpstart program which is free for juniors and seniors,” said Cody. “We want to ensure students are prepared when they leave high school. We are trying to set them up for success because it is a big transition.”

MVHS will be holding a large college fair for students to participate in on Friday, October 11, 2024. Students are highly encouraged to attend the fair, speak with different college admissions personnel, gain insight into the college admissions requirements, and find programs that are the greatest fit for them.
