Career and Technical Education hosts National Apprenticeship Week Fair
Students at Mount Vernon High School were exploring various career pathways, such as electricians and carpentry during the National Apprenticeship Week Fair on Thursday, November 21, 2024. They looked through virtual reality (VR) sets and talked to professionals in the field at the fair.
A number of local trade unions, along with the New York State Department of Labor, lined up tables with pamphlets and flyers full of information to educate students about what it takes to be in these fields. Events such as this one give the opportunity to highlight all the benefits apprenticeships have, while also helping students land roles within a desired industry.
“I came to the fair to experience and see what each table brings, and to see what I like and what I don’t like,” said Jaden Smith, a senior at MVHS. “Just to know myself a little more. The electrician program was interesting to me because in my home country Jamaica, I wanted to be an electrical engineer. This enthused me more; it made me happy to know about it a little more and ask more about it so I can pursue that career.”
The New York State Department of Labor not only provided students with information and resources on how to apply for an apprenticeship, but they also supplied VR sets for students to get a visual experience of careers that they might want to pursue. Students were able to explore different career sectors including agriculture, food and natural resources, arts, audio/video technology & communications and architecture and construction.
