Mount Vernon High School approved for International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme

Mount Vernon High School received a letter of acceptance from the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) on Monday, August 12, 2024, notifying the school of its approval to offer the Career-related Programme. MVHS currently offers several IB courses, which are international college-level classes where students can receive an IB Diploma and even college credit.

The Career-related Programme will first be taught at MVHS beginning in September. The program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career-related education in the final two years of secondary school. It aims to give students a foundation to support their further studies and ensure preparedness for success in the workforce.

As part of the program, all students must study a minimum of two Diploma Programme courses and complete the Career-related Programme core, which consists of the following: personal and professional skills, service learning, a reflective project, and language development. Students must also be enrolled in at least one of the Career and Technical Education pathways at MVHS.

To earn the IB Diploma at MVHS, students must complete course and exam requirements in six IB subjects and write an extended essay of independent research on a topic chosen by the student and guided by a faculty mentor. They must also complete Creativity, Activity, and Service activities (CAS) and participate in a critical thinking course called Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

The authorization procedure for the program is designed to ensure that schools are well-prepared to implement it successfully. Once authorized, all IB World Schools are required to participate in an ongoing review and development process.

“I must congratulate and thank Ms. Abel for all her hard work in making this a reality. Your tenacity is commendable,” said MVHS Principal Dr. Pauline Pearce. “Special thanks to Ms. Naughton, Ms. Williams, Ms. Ball, and Ms. Cohen for your time supporting the curriculum development and student pathways. Thank you to everyone for your role in the authorization process. Here's to aspiring to excellence in all that we do!”
