Mount Vernon STEAM Academy holds the annual Senior Awards Convocation

On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy held its annual Senior Award Convocation event to celebrate high-achieving seniors of the class of 2024. Awards, many of which were monetary, were given to various hard-working seniors for their commitment to academic achievement, community service and sports. Families dressed up and supported their children in being recognized for their accomplishments over the past four years.

The event was opened by a live music performance by students as families shuffled into their seats, excited for the festivities.

“Today we celebrate our scholars for their academic achievement,” said Dr. Christopher Pearce, principal of STEAM, greeting students and families. “Their hard work, determination, and perseverance have paid off. Success requires effort … We must always put in effort and perseverance to succeed.”

Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Curriculum and Instruction and Administration Dr. Jamal Doggett and Dr. Beverley Jones, Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Curriculum and Instruction and School Improvement, also congratulated the students.

“Choose your friends wisely. Make sure you surround yourself with positive people and positive energy,” said Dr. Doggett, offering advice to the graduating class. “Continue to set goals for yourself and make sure you reach them. All of us have a dream. Turn your dreams into goals, your goals into actions, and your actions will become your reality.”

Before awards were given, Board of Education President Lorna Kirwan thanked teachers and parents and encouraged students to continue their hard work.

Throughout the ceremony, awards were announced by Assistant Principal Anjanette Brown, and students accepted the awards before shaking the hands of District and school administrators. Many student awards were accompanied by scholarships provided by STEAM, the PTA and local organizations and churches to help support their upcoming journey into higher education.

“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the class of 2024,” said Mrs. Brown. “Your achievements are a testament to your hard work, dedication and resilience. As you embark on the next chapter of your lives, may you continue to strive for excellence and have a positive impact on the world. Thank you for inspiring us, and best wishes for a bright and successful future.”
