Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School celebrates Autism Awareness Month

A sea of denim and teal moved through the hallways at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School, as students, faculty and staff wore blue for Autism Awareness Month on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

The day started off with morning announcements, where each morning for the month of April students learn about different people throughout history with autism. Today, scholars learned about the great painter Michaelangelo.

“We want to teach our children and have them imagine a world where anything can be kind,” said Assistant Principal Gordon Palmer. “We want them to learn how to embrace diversity, and to embrace one another and simply be kind, no matter who the person is.”

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, classes throughout the school created and colored puzzle pieces. Once all the puzzle pieces were completed, classes put the pieces together to create intricate works of art to be displayed throughout the school.
