Lincoln School students learn about Franklin H. Williams and legal careers

Seventh and eighth grade students at Lincoln School learned about one of the important figures of Black history on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. They also learned about careers in the legal system and heard from community members with legal experience.

“We want to give you an opportunity today to recognize the contributions of wonderful people in this community and throughout history such as Franklin H. Williams,” said Principal Rebecca Jones as students sat for the documentary.

Students watched “A Bridge to Justice: The Life of Franklin H. Williams,” followed by a panel discussion led by the Executive Director of the Franklin H. Williams Commission, Mary Lynne Nicolas-Brewster.

Students quietly watched and learned about the life of Franklin H. Williams and his history of fighting for justice. They then discussed the documentary and how several influential leaders in Black history are often overlooked and ‘hidden.’

“A hidden figure is someone that you didn’t know made an impact on society,” said Ms. Nicolas-Brewster. “If they weren’t there, we wouldn't have the types of advances that we have now. Franklin Williams was a hidden figure.”

Westchester County Commissioner of Jurors Dr. Betty Campbell and Mount Vernon Senior Court Clerk Keneisha Haye participated in the panel discussion as well, which began after they discussed the documentary.

Each of the panelists was a community member that plays a pivotal role in the court system. Students learned more about their roles and gained information that might encourage them to pursue a career in the legal system.

Panelists talked about the importance of jury service, legal careers and opportunities available to students. In the afternoon, more community members and legal professionals visited the school to explain more about careers in the justice system.
