Law Day at Hamilton School: Inspiring the next Generation of Leaders

Law was in order at Hamilton School, as fifth and sixth grade students got a glimpse into paralegal careers, civic responsibility and leadership from Corporation Counsel Brian Johnson, Esq. and The Honorable Judge Tamika Coverdale. This event was in honor of Law Day, centering around the theme: “The Rule of Law and the American Dream.”

This special Law Day presentation gave students the opportunity to learn firsthand from distinguished legal professionals and engage in meaningful discussion about justice and community.

The conversation started with Mr. Johnson and Judge Coverdale introducing themselves and sharing what their roles entail, before diving into the U.S. Constitution, and what rights students have at school. The duo explained that the Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals from unreasonable searches, does not apply to students while they are in school.

“Today, I learned that even though you don't believe that the principals should go in your locker because it's supposed to be a private property, it's not actually a private property because you're on their (school) property,” said Kamori Nembhard, a sixth grader who is inspired to pursue a career in law. “The same laws you have at home and on the street, you don't have in school. I love how this is my first time ever meeting an actual lawyer, and I loved how they were interacting with all the students.”

The group also had the opportunity to ask questions about the Fourth Amendment and other questions regarding the law. Students engaged in a meaningful discussion with the duo, with some students becoming inspired to pursue a career in the field.
