Grimes School Welcomes New Families with Informative Tour for K-6 Students

Grimes School hosted a tour on Tuesday morning for families of new students in grades K-6, who are transferring to the school due to the building reorganization.

Parents took this opportunity to learn about the  environment for their children at Grimes and what types of support is available for them. With dedicated teachers and a strong sense of community, Grimes School offers a positive place for students to learn and thrive.

Dr. Severin Cornelius, Grimes School’s Principal, led the tour alongside Donna DeCecco and Deborah Keane, reading specialists at Grimes. They assisted him in showing the students and parents what they can expect from the school. Families toured the classrooms, the auditorium – which also held graduation rehearsals at the same time – the gym, and the reading room.

During the tour, Dr. Cornelius explained how the school wants to engage with its students while also giving them an entrepreneurship mindset and celebrating culture.

Grimes School actively engages its students by facilitating visits to local businesses and inviting community representatives to speak with them. Recently, a nearby auto mechanic shop not only accommodates student visits but has also made financial donations to the school.

“I think programming is extremely important,” said Dr. Cornelius. “We try to do a variety of things here at Grimes to attract different types of students here and to trigger all of their different types of learning abilities.”

Additionally, Grimes School organizes cultural events such as African dance celebrations. These initiatives not only enhance the educational experience but also serve to attract new students by illustrating the school’s commitment to fostering strong community ties.

“We're big on culture here. So we try to do an assortment of different things to try to engage the students and make them love coming to school every day.”

Dr. Cornelius believes that the future is important, knowing that eventually, students will transition to middle school and high school. He wants to ensure that the students at Grimes are well-prepared for the opportunities that high school presents. Dr. Cornelius’ goal is to provide them with the best possible path to success as they move forward, reflecting his commitment to their development at Grimes.
