Baskets for bucks! Grimes students take their best shots in March Madness fundraiser

Grimes Elementary School students cheered each other Thursday as they made free throws in the gym, which was transformed into a lively arena for a March Madness–inspired fundraiser that blended friendly competition with school spirit.

The second-annual free throw event gave every student in the school a chance to step to the line and shoot for one minute — all while helping raise money for important school activities.

“They all have a chance to free throw for a minute and raise funds at a flat rate by the bucket. It’s just a great way that the kids can get experience and moving their bodies and raising funds for kindergarten and sixth-grade graduation,” teacher Alexis Kurppe-Salubro said.

Students collected pledges ahead of the event, turning each shot into an opportunity to give back. Sponsors could choose how to contribute, either by pledging a flat amount or by donating based on how many baskets a student made.

Flyers sent home helped spread the word, while local businesses also stepped up to support the effort. The result was a schoolwide event that combined physical activity, teamwork and generosity.

Throughout the day, the gym buzzed with cheers as students took their turns at the hoop, encouraged by classmates, teachers and coach Thomas Itri, who helped guide shooters and keep the energy high.

By the end of the event, about $600 had already been raised—with more expected to come in—making the day not just a fun celebration of March Madness, but a meaningful investment in the school community.
