Testing the waters: Graham School guides families through NYSESLAT

Families at Graham School got a clear look at what lies ahead as English language learners prepare for this year’s New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT).

ENL teachers Mrs. Solomon and Ms. Langton hosted a parent meeting on March 26 to walk families through the test, offering a detailed overview of its purpose, structure and scoring. Parents learned how the assessment measures students’ progress in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English, as well as how those results help shape instruction and support services.

To bring the test into focus, the presenters reviewed sample questions and explained the format students will encounter. The session concluded with an open question-and-answer period, giving families the opportunity to address concerns and gain clarity ahead of testing.

The event reflected a strong commitment to accessibility and inclusion. With the support of Parent Liaison Veronica Graham, the meeting was offered both in person and via Zoom, with translation available in Arabic, Haitian Creole and Spanish so all families could participate fully. Light refreshments added a welcoming touch to the evening.

NYSESLAT testing began April 6, and the Graham School community is cheering on its students as they get ready to show what they know.

Parents seeking additional information can access NYSESLAT parent brochures in multiple languages here: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic and Haitian Creole.
