Scholars explore postsecondary education options during college fair at Denzel Washington School of the Arts
Scholars at Denzel Washington School of the Arts exited the library with pamphlets in hand, excited for what's to come after exploring their postsecondary education options at a college fair on Friday, November 1, 2024.
“We wanted to get a balance of trade schools and also colleges to meet all of their different interests,” said Tara Lattimer-Wilson, School Counselor at DWSA. “Because this is an art school as well, we wanted to make sure that we had schools that feature majors in the arts. We felt that it’s important to bring it to the students because they are not always able to get to a college fair somewhere else.”
Approximately a dozen colleges and universities attended the fair, including Spelman College, Monroe University, Purchase College and Manhattanville University. During this, students spoke with representatives from the schools to gain more insight on what each of them has to offer.
“One thing that I learned today is that there are a lot of opportunities from all the colleges I’ve seen,” said Malcolm McClellan, a senior at DWSA. “I’m just happy I have the information that I need with the type of schools that I saw today.”
Inviting institutions into the high schools provides students with the opportunity to gain insight on various college programs and see if a school could be a good fit for them. These events also properly prepare students for the college application process and answer any questions they may have about it.
“The college fair was actually really nice,” said Leah LoBlack, a junior at DWSA. “I looked at Livingstone College and Purchase College, and they’re both really good. I would like to major in business and finance. I’m kinda stuck between the two because they’re both really good for what I want to do.”
