Winter concerts and celebrations take place across the Mount Vernon City School District

Winter concerts, performances, and celebrations were underway throughout the Mount Vernon City School District in the week leading up to the holiday break.

Traphagen hosted its Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

Pennington School held its Winter Concert and Art Show on December 20 as well. Students were split into grade levels and performed the concert and art show with their peers. Parents and family were in attendance proudly watching the show.  

Rebecca Turner Elementary School held its Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 21. The crowd was packed with parents who came out to support their children.

Edward Williams School also held a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Wildcat Holiday Celebration on December 21.

Denzel Washington School of the Arts held its annual Winter Showcase on December 21. The performance combined dancing, singing, and acting for a robust holiday show.

Cecil H. Parker held a PTA fundraiser during their Photos With Santa event on December 21. Scholars took pictures with Santa, and the PTA raised over $200.

Grimes School hosted its Winter Concert on Thursday, December 22. Students sang and performed to a packed crowd of parents and other students.

Dr. Pauline Pearce, Mount Vernon High School Principal (Superintendent for the Day)

Dear Parents and Guardians, 

I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred at Williams School this afternoon where a flame erupted in a classroom. The room was immediately evacuated with minimal disruption to the rest of the building. Emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, and all necessary precautions were taken to ensure the safety of everyone in the building.

Leadership requires the ability to make decisions quickly, and on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Mount Vernon High School Principal Dr. Pauline Pearce served as superintendent for the day and had the responsibility of making those decisions. Dr. Pearce was the third participant in Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith’s “Superintendent for a Day” series.

We are collectively letting out a sigh of relief in the Mount Vernon City School District, as we have been notified that our state aid funding for the upcoming school year will not be reduced. After over a month of lobbying with state and local officials, we prevailed and will receive the $2.9 million that was set to be removed from our budget in Governor Kathy Hochul’s budget proposal.

Principals throughout the district set up tables with brochures highlighting the District’s accomplishments at the Mount Vernon High School cafeteria to showcase their school for potential applicants during the Mount Vernon City School District Community Fair on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Cheers erupted with every basket made in the Mount Vernon High School gym, as students with disabilities from Mount Vernon High School and Woodlands High School competed in a game of basketball on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. The game was held through the New York State Pioneer League, which provides students with disabilities the opportunity to play on a team.
