Superintendent of Schools Dr. Demario Strickland receives Canisius University leadership award

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Demario Strickland was named as the inaugural recipient of Canisius University Alumni Association’s Emerging Leader Award. The award, which recognizes accomplishments of alumni 40 years and younger, was announced on June 26.

In their announcement, Canisius University Alumni Association recognized Dr. Strickland’s achievements by saying, “(Dr.) Strickland’s career spans multiple educational leadership roles, from mentor-teacher and dean of students to building administrator across many New York State school districts.

“Known as ‘the teaching and learning’ superintendent, he has led three schools out of state receivership and built strong relationships with the New York State Education Department.”

Dr. Strickland will be recognized during ceremonies on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center at Canisius University.

"Canisius University is a place that is close to my heart as an alum, and I am grateful to be recognized for my efforts to carry out their values of service to others and a commitment to excellence," said Dr. Strickland. "I carry those values with me here to the Mount Vernon City School District, where I hope to serve the students here with the same level of dedication."

Superintendent of MVCSD shares community feedback on budget priorities

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Demario Strickland presented community feedback on budget priorities for the 2026 - 2027 school year to the Board of Education Tuesday evening. The District conducted a survey in December to hear from community members and stakeholders about what they think is essential for the 2026 -27 budget.

 Amirah Arroya and Taj Lovell qualify for Nike Nationals

Congratulations to our Girls' Track and Field for an outstanding performance this past weekend! Taj Lovell ran her best time of the season in the 55 hurdles, qualifying for Nike Nationals and breaking into the top 50 hurdlers in New York! Amirah Arroya won the shot put and weight throw, qualifying for the Nike Nationals in both events. She threw a personal best in the weight throw along with her teammates Jasmine McKenzie and Daniella Thorpe, who placed 4th in the weight throw.
