STEAM senior preparing for future with rigorous classes and community involvement
Bryce Marable is a Mount Vernon STEAM Academy senior who shows perseverance through hard work and dedication to his academics. Experiencing a significant change after transferring from outside of the District to STEAM, Bryce has demonstrated that his education and securing a bright future come before all.
Bryce has an exceedingly impressive grade point average of 100.7 and is currently taking four Advanced Placement (AP) classes during his senior year. He is balancing AP Literature, AP Psychology, AP World History, and AP Biology – his favorite, as he hopes to study biology as a major in college and pursue medical school post-graduation.
Bryce’s largest accomplishments he highlights are maintaining his GPA and his spot on the honor roll. This is done through studying hard by utilizing memorization platforms like Quizlet and flashcards. He also quizzes himself to keep the knowledge fresh and in his mind.
Before transferring to STEAM, Bryce was a player on the football team at his former school for two years. He also had a spot on the track team and was a peer tutor for classmates during this time.
Now at STEAM, he is a member of the school’s National Honor Society and student government. In NHS, he has participated in several community service events. He fondly remembers the time he made holiday cards for patients at White Plains Hospital. As a member of student government, Bryce has helped with fundraising, planning class trips, organizing events and designing merchandise.
Bryce shouts out Mary Demsey, a biology teacher and coordinator for the school's NHS program, for helping him make his mark at STEAM.
“Mrs. Demsey has helped me a lot,” said Bryce. “She helped me to get inducted into the National Society as head of the program and when I was new last year, she introduced herself and said that she thinks I’d be a great fit for the NHS at STEAM. From there, it was a breeze. She reached out, made a connection with me, and really helped me when I did not know a lot of people here.”
Bryce has also participated in a Box City Simulation, where students got a first-hand experience of what it is like to be unhoused and live with little amenities.
“This opened my eyes,” said Bryce. “You hear a lot about what homeless people go through, but you don’t experience it. It opened my eyes because it was brutal, and it was cold.”
Bryce has also helped organize a homeless outreach program, where he and a few classmates from his former school reached out to local schools and churches to organize a drive to distribute socks, hoodies, coats and hand-made toiletry bags.
There is no doubt that Bryce has an extremely bright future ahead of him. He has applied to 18 schools all over the country including the University of North Carolina, Florida State University, New York University, and Binghamton University. He has been accepted into SUNY University at Albany, Temple University, Howard University and University at Buffalo for an 80% tuition scholarship for all four years.
In college, Bryce intends to major in biology with a minor in business administration. He was inspired after seeing his family members who are medical professionals and have their own practice or businesses. Although he is still exploring medical fields and careers, he wants to become a physician and use his minor in business administration to help him run his own practice.
He is looking forward to moving forward into college and his chosen school’s medical honors program. This will allow him to meet alumni and gain valuable connections, internships, volunteer hours, and hospital connections.
Bryce is excited to get his foot in the door so he can build up himself and his repertoire to make his goals a reality.
“My senior (year) has been going pretty smoothly,” said Bryce. “I am pretty much done with the application process, and I got everything in with early action.”
As Bryce looks towards the remainder of his senior year, he reminds himself that he still has to remain passionate about school. He intends to improve on every report card and marking period and inspires his classmates to do the same.
