State of the District Address delivered to faculty and staff

Mount Vernon City School District Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland addressed staff, teachers and administration during his State of the District yesterday, celebrating accomplishments and highlighting challenges during his first 125 days leading the District.

“I always make it an effort to visit schools and see all the great things that are happening in our classrooms,” he said. He encouraged them to invite him to come to their classroom to see innovative educational practices. “I hope to see you all in your buildings soon!”

He explained that he has made it a priority to highlight and communicate both student achievement and amazing things that are happening throughout the district by emailing them and the community a video summary called “Mount Vernon’s Jewel Box” each week.

“So far, I have showcased a variety of initiatives in our schools such as food services, CTE, the arts, Hispanic Heritage Month and more,” he said.

He provided information such as new administrative personnel, department updates, encouragement to meet the District’s student achievement goals, and legislative priorities. He also explained how the district will implement standard operating procedures to work in an effective and efficient manner. “Establishing these will ensure that we are all moving in lockstep as we navigate our challenges, including the financial challenges that have faced the district for years,” he said.
