Our Students Now: Dr. Albert "George" Thomas

Dr. Albert “George” Thomas, M.D., M.S., graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1975. He studied medicine at ICAHN School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and became an obstetrician and gynecologist following his education.  

“Dr. Thomas’s success in medicine is another example of the types of remarkable careers our students can strive for,” said Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith. “He has had a fantastic career and has helped many people along the way. Great success comes out of Mount Vernon when you work for it!”

Current position title and company/entity:
Chief of Gynecology and Women's Health and Women's Health Medical Director at the James J. Peters Veterans Administration Medical Center (JJPVAMC). I am also an attending obstetrician and gynecologist at the Elmhurst General Hospital, a part of the NYC Health and Hospital Corporation (NYCHHC), Elmhurst, Queens, New York. My academic title and affiliation is Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. 

  1. What are you doing now with your life and career?  

Obstetrics involves the prenatal care of pregnant individuals, including delivering their babies. Gynecology involves medical and surgical care of women's health throughout the lifespan. I am also involved with program administration at the JJPVAMC.  

  1. How has MVHS/MVCSD prepared you for your career?  

The availability of outstanding STEM coursework, supportive counselors and teachers who made time to mentor me and my fellow students.  

  1. Who are some people who inspired or pushed you to be better during your time in the school district?  

Division B Guidance Counselor Michael Boyle, Division B Principal M. Warren, Division E Counselor L. Giatti, science teachers Peter Papula, Jeffrey Dicker, and Frank Pandolfo, Mathematics Department Head Matthew Clark, Graham Elementary School Principal Mr. Peterson, Assistant Principal H. Smith, and Counselor Dr. Fineberg.  

  1. What was your favorite part of attending the Mount Vernon City School District?  

The challenging assortment of AP courses and various civic and social activities made school attendance enjoyable. 

  1.  What is one thing from your time in the Mount Vernon City School District that stuck with you the most or helped you the most in your career?  

I honed crucial skills at Nichols Junior High and MVHS, which have been the cornerstone of my continuous success in my career. These abilities encompass collaborative learning with peers and impeccable time management. 

  1. What are you most proud of from your school experience?  

That my closest friends were able to attain success in their desired careers. 

  1. What do you know now that you wish you knew during your time in the school district?  

Going to a HBCU has substantial advantages over attending a majority college. 

     8. What would you tell current students today to help them on their academic and career journey?  

Play hard, work harder, and always stay focused on your dreams!

Now a pre-K teacher at Edward Williams School, Stacia Fogg graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1988. She has been a teacher in the Mount Vernon City School District since 1999 and now spends her time guiding students and their families through the first years of their education.  She is also a member of the executive board for the Mount Vernon Federation of Teachers.

Students representatives from across the district come together for the November Student Advisory Meeting

On November 20, 2024, students from various schools of the Mount Vernon City School District convened at the Board of Education to discuss important student current events and topics. Middle and high school students met with Dr. Jamal Doggett, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Administration, to suggest changes and represent their schools as members of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council.
