New teacher orientation provides clear goals for upcoming school year

New teacher orientation provides clear goals for upcoming school year

Approximately 50 new teachers met with administrators to collectively review this year’s curriculum and goals at the Mount Vernon City School District’s new teacher orientation on Aug. 30 and 31.

Dr. Jamal Doggett, assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, discussed his expectations with the new staff, prioritizing teacher best practices, social and emotional learning, and family and community engagement.

“If we follow this plan and work together, all we can do is go up,” said Dr. Doggett.

This presentation was followed by Dr. Satish Jagnandan, the district’s director of STEAM. He presented what teacher “best practices” truly means – Educators behaviors that lead towards a more than expected student performance/achievement growth over a year. Through a group activity, the new teachers worked together on how to achieve best practices.

“We make a difference with every child that comes into the classroom,” said Dr. Jagnandan.

With an emphasis on collective goals that will be met through districtwide consistency, the Mount Vernon City School District is excited to welcome these new additions.

We are collectively letting out a sigh of relief in the Mount Vernon City School District, as we have been notified that our state aid funding for the upcoming school year will not be reduced. After over a month of lobbying with state and local officials, we prevailed and will receive the $2.9 million that was set to be removed from our budget in Governor Kathy Hochul’s budget proposal.
