MVHS and MVHA receive recognition for being first schools in Westchester County for being Heart Safe

Mount Vernon High School and Mount Vernon Honor Academy were recently awarded banners from Project Adam, being recognized as the first Heart Safe Schools in Westchester County on Tuesday afternoon. Local medical personnel and school administrators gathered in the community center at Mount Vernon High School to celebrate this monumental achievement.

Project Adam is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac arrests in children and adolescents through advocacy, education and readiness.

The organization began in 1999, after 17-year-old Adam Lemel suffered from Sudden Cardiac Arrest during a basketball game and collapsed on the floor. The program works with schools nationwide to create Heart Safe plans, including training in CPR and AED use, as well as implementing emergency response plans.

The ceremony started with an introduction from Lisa Mayzun, Director of Physical Education in the District.

“Today, we celebrate not just a program, but a promise to protect the lives of our students, staff, and community members,” said Ms. Mayzun. “This designation as a Heart Safe School is a testament to our commitment to health, safety, and preparedness. It reflects the efforts of our entire school community, a community that values the well-being of every individual.”

Before being presented the banners, audience members heard from partners, such as Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, and administrators including Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith and MVHA Principal Danielle Davis-Marrow.

"The implementation of the Project Adam Heart Safety Team project has significantly enhanced the well-being of our school community,” said Ms. Davis-Marrow. “By promoting a culture of preparedness and rapid response, it has empowered both students and faculty with the knowledge and tools to act confidently in emergency situations. This initiative has not only improved safety awareness but also fostered a stronger sense of care and collaboration throughout our building."

The image shows a sign above the entrance of a building, displaying a welcoming message to visitors. The sign has an arched design with decorative lettering, and the background appears to be a plain, light-colored wall.

The Prekindergarten Department held its Homework Celebration on Saturday at the Pelham Picture House! The celebration recognized 50 out of the 112 students who completed 90% or more of their homework from October to February. A lottery for 50 spaces was held to select students for the celebration. Families were so excited to watch the Mario Movie in a private local theater, and the Prekindergarten Department can't wait to host their final celebration in June with a viewing of Toy Story 2!
