Mount Vernon City School District to Host Public Hearing on Proposed Charter School Revision
The Mount Vernon City School District has been notified that the New York State Department of Education is in receipt of an application for a charter school revision to increase its grade span, to add kindergarten through Grade 4 to its current Grade 5 through Grade 8 configuration; and to make a corresponding increase to its authorized enrollment from 355 students to 554 students, within the Mount Vernon City School District. The proposed revision is for “Amani Public Charter School”.
As part of the approval process, the Mount Vernon City School District is required to host a public hearing and collect comments related to the application. The hearing will take place from 5pm-5:45pm on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, in the Board Room at the Education Center, 165 N. Columbus Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York, 10553.
This hearing is being held pursuant to New York State Education Law 2857(1) which states:
- “Prior to the issuance, revision, or renewal of a charter, the school district in which the charter school is located shall hold a public hearing to solicit comments from the community in connection with the foregoing.”
- “Such hearing shall be held within the community potentially impacted by the proposed charter school.”
- “In addition, such school districts shall be given an opportunity to comment on the proposed charter to the charter entity and such charter entity shall consider any comments raised and submit any such comments to the board of regents with the application for issuance, revision, or renewal of a charter.”
The New York State Board of Regents, Acting Superintendent, Dr. K. Veronica Smith, and the Mount Vernon City School District welcome comments on the proposed revision, including those related to the programmatic and fiscal impact of the proposed revision on public and non-public schools in the area.

Today, Friday, February 14, 2025, marks the two-year anniversary of Dr. K. Veronica Smith’s first day as Acting Superintendent. Join the Mount Vernon City School District in wishing her a happy anniversary! In these two years, the District has emphasized its commitment to its scholars. Through the Back to Basics, Forward to Mastery approach, where teachers are getting back to the fundamentals of teaching and learning, the District has seen great academic improvements, leading graduation rates and test scores to trend upward.

Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith celebrated her birthday (February 9) at The Education Center with staff and administrators of the Mount Vernon City School District. Staff dressed down for the day, enjoyed cake and wished Dr. Smith a happy birthday. Happy Birthday Dr. Smith!
Yanick St. Cyr and Anna Valinda Mendy, Mount Vernon High School 12th-grade Nursing Assistant Program students, volunteered at the Southern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) SkillsUSA Regional Competition on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Center for Career Services. Yanick and Anna are also in the SkillsUSA Club at MVHS.
The Mount Vernon City School District’s superintendent search survey, conducted by Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), has been extended to Monday, February 24, 2025, at 11:59 p.m., to allow for further engagement with the community. HYA will present their leadership profile report at the Board of Education on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.
