Mount Vernon security monitor praised for his actions preventing a potential incident

Winston Johnson, a Mount Vernon City School District security monitor, was honored at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. He was recognized for protecting Mount Vernon students and staff during summer school by stopping a student from entering Mount Vernon High School with a weapon. 

“I would like to acknowledge a Mount Vernon City School District hero, Mr. Winston Johnson, for saving the lives of staff and students by single handedly, and I mean single handedly, searching a student over the summer who had a weapon,” said Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith at the Board of Education meeting. “He was able to stave off what could have been a serious problem.”  

The student fled the school and was later apprehended by police. Mr. Johnson’s actions that day may have protected Mount Vernon students from harm, and he continues to serve with the purpose of keeping children safe at the forefront of everything he does.

Students at Hamilton School gathered around to give thanks and appreciate one another before Thanksgiving break with a feast on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. The arrangement of food included turkey, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and various desserts brought by families from the school community. 

Coach Cimmino Hall of Fame

Coach Robert Cimmino was inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Coach Cimmino received this recognition for his exceptional career coaching the Mount Vernon Knights varsity boys' basketball team.
