Mount Vernon City School District hosts Family Fun Health and Wellness Night

Mount Vernon City School District hosts Family Fun Health and Wellness Night

Families across the Mount Vernon City School District were breaking a sweat after participating in various activities at Mount Vernon High School on Thursday, December 5, 2024, for the Family Fun Health and Wellness Night.

Several organizations from Westchester County showed up to support the event including Raising Lebar, Lexington Center for Recovery and I Love Kickboxing in Pelham Bay. These establishments provided resources and services for families during the event including yoga, kickboxing and mock field sobriety tests.

Physical Education teachers throughout the District were also at the event, demonstrating various ways families can stay active year-round.

“The experience is fun, I really like the instant games,” said Shabaka Richards, a fifth grader at Mount Vernon Honor Academy. “I like hanging out here, it’s chill, it’s good.”

Events such as this are essential to bringing the community together and providing resources to families. More specifically, this event provided families with healthy snacks and new workouts they can do together.

“This is a very good opportunity for kids to go out and get active,” said Marleen Ingram, parent of a kindergartener at Cecil H. Parker. “It’s good not only physically, but mentally; this will help with their mental state. They (this District) should put events on more often to get parents involved with their children.”

Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith recently held a Zoom meeting with families from Cecil H. Parker School, Mount Vernon Honor Academy and Mount Vernon Leadership Academy, the three schools with proposals to be closed. The District is proposing these closures due to declining enrollment, costly repairs of its older buildings and costs associated with maintaining the K-8 school model, as well as a NYS designation of significant fiscal stress. A long-term solution is essential, but no decisions have been made yet
