Per New York State Education Department (NYSED) data compiled on Datawrapper (https://www.datawrapper.de/_/gwj66/), the Mount Vernon City School District was ranked 10th out of 39 school districts in Westchester County in per student spending at $37,451 per student in the 2023-24 school year, the most recent year that public data is available.   

While the district spends less per student than nine Westchester school districts, it also faces some of the highest expenses in the county. The MVCSD cares for a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students and a higher number of students with disabilities than any of the other 38 Westchester County public school districts, per NYSED’s Student Information Repository System. Each of these students requires additional services that make educating them more costly.

MVCSD welcomes Derrick Dunlap to the District as Traphagen's newest principal

Derrick Dunlap, a veteran educator with two decades of experience leading schools, improving student achievement and building strong school communities has been appointed principal of Traphagen Elementary School. Mr. Dunlap brings a diverse background in elementary and secondary education to the Mount Vernon City School District, having served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in Washington, D.C., Maryland and New York.

Leaders from the Mount Vernon Parent Teacher Association (PTA), parent liaisons, and school board trustees participated in the New York State PTA Summer Leadership Conference held on July 18-19 in Albany, NY. This annual event provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to engage in workshops designed to enhance their skills and collaboration efforts to better support students and families in the Mount Vernon City School District.
