Mount Vernon alumni give back to the community through college prep program

Fasten your seatbelts, Mount Vernon Flight 914 has landed!

The “pilots,” three college students from Mount Vernon, organized a “3-day immersive experience for current HS juniors and seniors to prepare them for college and young adulthood,” with workshops, roundtable discussions and a variety of team-building activities that took place from July 11-13.

The event – the brainchild of Judith Bennett, Heaven Cunningham and Alexandria Jones – was billed as the “first annual MV Collegiate Prep Summit for students by students.”

Graduates and rising seniors were deemed the priority for the free program but 11th-graders were welcome to apply to get a jumpstart on their road to a college degree.

“Three Black female MV Graduates have taken their work experience in Mount Vernon City Hall and their student life experience and created a direct flight from MV to Degree!” read a caption on the mvflight914 site on Instagram, where short clips were posted from the event.

Ms. Bennett is a rising senior at Howard University, where she is studying elementary education. She is a summer intern with the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau.

Ms. Cunningham is studying business administration at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, where she is a rising senior. She also is an intern with the Youth Bureau.

And Ms. Jones, an intern with the Mount Vernon City Hall, is a rising senior at Lincoln University, where she is pursuing a premed track.
