For the sixth year, the Mount Vernon City School District is offering prekindergarten for three-year-olds (UPK-3). A lottery was held on Thursday afternoon for the upcoming 2026-27 school year to occupy the 60 spots available.

The lottery process was explained by Director of Prekindergarten, Dr. Gayle White, before numbers were drawn.

Participants were given a specialized number for their children to identify them in the lottery. Selections were chosen using a generated wheel that picked numbers out one-by-one. In addition to the 60 selected, 30 families were added to the waiting list. 

All families who participated in the lottery will receive a letter notifying them if they were chosen, on the wait list, or did not make the cut on Monday, July 13, 2026. Those who were selected will have up to 10 days to fill out their registration application: https://www.mtvernoncsd.org/family-community/registration/online-registration

If families do not complete and submit their registration within 10 days from receiving their letter, their spot will be taken by someone on the waiting list. Families are encouraged to fill out the required forms and submit any other information needed as soon as they receive their letter. This annual event provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to engage in workshops designed to enhance their skills and collaboration efforts to better support students and families in the Mount Vernon City School District.
