Health, Fitness and Wellness Committee holds Zumba Class

Under the direction of Board of Education President Lorna Kirwan and Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction and Administration Dr. Jamal Doggett, the Health, Fitness and Wellness committee sponsored a "Have Fun with Zumba" night on Tuesday, October 11, 2023, in the Mount Vernon High School gymnasium.

About 40 community members, staff and students participated in the free fitness event taught by certified Zumba Instructor Chrissy Mendez with support from Elizabeth Torres, Dance and Physical Education teacher at Mount Vernon High School. This was the second event, following International Walk to School Day, promoted this year to raise awareness of the importance of engaging in activities that contribute to a healthy mind, body and spirit.

Lisa Mayzun, the new director of Health and Physical Education organized the event and was thankful for everyone who participated, but especially the school community of MVHS for being the host of the event with so many people in attendance. The District looks forward to seeing similar participation in its future health and wellness events.

Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith recently held a Zoom meeting with families from Cecil H. Parker School, Mount Vernon Honor Academy and Mount Vernon Leadership Academy, the three schools with proposals to be closed. The District is proposing these closures due to declining enrollment, costly repairs of its older buildings and costs associated with maintaining the K-8 school model, as well as a NYS designation of significant fiscal stress. A long-term solution is essential, but no decisions have been made yet
