Families learn about health and get active at MVCSD Family Fun Health Night
On Thursday, March 13, Benjamin Turner Academy hosted an incredible Family Fun Health Night, sponsored by the Mount Vernon City School District’s Physical Education and Health Department. It was a fantastic evening where District families came together to learn, engage and have fun.
Highlights of the night included:
- Substance Abuse Awareness: Lexington Recovery provided valuable insights into the effects of substance abuse.
- Hands-Only CPR: Project Adam taught life-saving CPR techniques.
- Self Defense: Scarsdale Aikido demonstrated essential self-defense moves.
- Mindfulness: Brian Simmons, Director of CTE, led a calming mindfulness session.
- Zumba: Elizabeth Torres, PE Teacher, got everyone moving with an energetic Zumba class.
- Physical Games and Activities: PE teachers from MVCSD organized a variety of fun, physical games and activities for everyone to enjoy.
Parent Liaisons were also on hand to support and promote District activities, ensuring everyone felt welcome and informed.
“Thank you to everyone who attended and made this event a huge success!” said Lisa Mayzun, Director of Health and Physical Education. “Let's continue to prioritize health and wellness in our community.”
Ethan Fertil, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy’s senior class president, has spent the last four years dedicated to making his school a fun and inclusive place for students to attend. Ethan works hard to create an enjoyable and sustainable future for himself, his classmates and his community through his academics and service.
Students at Mount Vernon Leadership Academy and Benjamin Turner Academy got hyped up during their pep rallies on Tuesday afternoon to boost confidence and student morale just before grades three through eight take their New York State tests.
The Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education adopted the proposed budget for the 2025-2026 school year at Tuesday’s Board meeting.

On Wednesday morning, the Parent Resource Center hosted a workshop with light refreshments and a read-aloud with the Easter Bunny for children and parents. Parent Liaisons partnered with Westchester Latinos Unidos, a nonprofit committed to empowering Latinos in Westchester, to provide this workshop. This is one of several events the PRC held in the month of April.

The 2025-2026 proposed budget for the Mount Vernon City School District will be presented by Assistant Superintendent for Business Jose Formoso at the Board of Education meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Click here to access Board of Education videos and streams to view the presentation virtually. This will be the first presentation of the proposed budget, and a budget hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The budget vote will take place on Tuesday, May 20.
Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith presented the second State of the District Address to staff at their monthly staff meeting on Wednesday. She provided updates to employees about the developments in the school reconfiguration process and what they can expect in the next few months.
