Eighth graders learn about educational options during High School Choice Night

Eighth graders across the Mount Vernon City School District got a glimpse into their options for high school on Wednesday evening during the High School Showcase. This annual event allows families to further understand what each of the three high schools have to offer. These include Mount Vernon High School, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy and Denzel Washington School of the Arts.

The evening started off with a presentation featuring an overview of each high school, facilitated by the Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Administration, Dr. Jamal Doggett. To view the presentation, click here.

He introduced the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Demario Strickland, who emphasized the importance of utilizing resources available to students in the District to help them achieve their academic and personal goals.

“We want you all to take advantage of the amazing programs that we have in our District,” Dr. Strickland said. “Please know this, no school is better than the other school. We are aspiring for all of our schools to be excellent.”

During the presentation, principals from each school had the chance to speak to the audience, emphasizing what makes their school unique. Dr. Doggett also highlighted programs at each of the schools.

Mount Vernon STEAM Academy integrates science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics for a holistic educational experience while emphasizing collaborative learning for projects and problem-solving activities.

STEAM Academy requires students to take the PreSAT test to be accepted into the school. Current eighth graders took this exam on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Denzel Washington School of the Arts emphasizes an arts-focus curriculum designed to nurture creative talents and skills in students. The program provides focused instruction in instrumental music, dance, theater, vocal music and visual arts in addition to a rigorous academic program.

Denzel Washington School of the Arts requires interested students to fill out an application, audition to evaluate their skills and participate in a family interview to assess students' support system and motivation.

After the presentation, families had the opportunity to further explore each school and their programs. Faculty, principals and current students from their respective schools stood at booths throughout the large cafeteria at Mount Vernon High School, discussing extracurricular activities, education and what they appreciate about their school. Individuals also answered any questions families might have about the schools and their enrollment process.

“For the High School Choice Night, I want to learn about the benefits from the different schools and see how it benefits me personally,” said Jaden Satchell, eighth grader at Graham School. “I have different hobbies and more stuff I want to learn.”

The Mount Vernon City School District's Pre-K Program hosted its Parent Academy on Saturday, April 11, 2026.  The event welcomed over 35 parents and students to engage in Math, SEL, Movement, and Reading lessons with our staff. The team used the Frog Street parent backpacks and lessons as a foundation for the learning. The teachers facilitated six different lessons that required parents to work with the Pre-K students. Breakfast was served, learning took place, and fun was had!

Excellence in education was celebrated at the Edith Kaplan Scholarship Dinner Dance last Friday, as 17 people were honored for their impact in Mount Vernon schools. The event, hosted by the Mount Vernon PTA Council, has so far raised $21,000, which will go toward scholarships for the Class of 2026! The PTA Council is still raising money, and you can make a donation by clicking here.

The Prekindergarten Department held its Homework Celebration on Saturday at the Pelham Picture House! The celebration recognized 50 out of the 112 students who completed 90% or more of their homework from October to February. A lottery for 50 spaces was held to select students for the celebration. Families were so excited to watch the Mario Movie in a private local theater, and the Prekindergarten Department can't wait to host their final celebration in June with a viewing of Toy Story 2!
