Dr. Demario Strickland delivers superintendent's report to BOE

In his monthly report to the Board of Education on Tuesday night, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Demario Strickland welcomed new administrators, congratulated a Denzel Washington School of the Arts assistant principal for a double honor, praised a partnership with a food services company and cheered the renewal of the culinary program.

His monthly address to the board is geared toward highlighting the District’s multifaceted accomplishments and activities while focusing on student achievement and outcomes.

“I would like to take the opportunity to welcome our new administration to the district, as we recently filled the positions for assistant superintendent for business and director of Student Support Services and Compliance,” Dr. Strickland said.

Dr. Ed Joseph “brings a plethora of experience in finance and psychology, making him a very suitable fit for the district,” the superintendent told the trustees about the new business official, who increased a district’s fund balance reserves by $3.7 million.

Dr. Strickland also congratulated Daina-Marie Gardener, a veteran of over 10 years in the Mount Vernon City School District who most recently served as the supervisor of special education and was previously a teacher.

“These roles have prepared her to take on the responsibility of supporting our students and Special Education Department,” he added.

In her new role, Ms. Gardener oversees individualized education plan audits to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, as well as district special-education policies and procedures.

Dr. Strickland then gave a shout-out to Yvonne Wright, assistant principal of Arts and Culture at DWSA who earned two honors: Top 10 Rising Assistant Principals in the country and Citizen of the Year by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

“These prestigious awards demonstrate Ms. Wright's dedication to our students' success, and her visionary leadership as an educator,” he said. “Congratulations Ms. Wright! The Mount Vernon City School District is immensely proud of your accomplishments.”

The superintendent also discussed the new partnership with Sodexo, a global K-12 food services management company, saying it ensured that every student has access to nutritious and balanced meals.

“Together, the District and Sodexo plan meals that meet state and federal nutrition guidelines while incorporating fresh ingredients, providing the best for our students. I am excited to see what will come with this partnership as the year progresses,” he said.

In other food matters, Dr. Strickland shared some exciting news for CTE by informing the school board that the Culinary Pathway has been renewed through New York State for another five years.

“This pathway renewal shows the program's success and sustainability, as it continues to expand and offer more robust opportunities for students during their high school career,” Dr. Strickland said, adding that “students can use their culinary credits towards completing ELA graduation requirements, due to the literacy embedded in the program.”

He also touched on other subjects, including hosting the first Superintendent's Advisory Council – which comprises students from every school in the District – and State Education Commissioner Dr. Betty Rosa, who got a glimpse into some of the educational offerings at Mount Vernon High School and Mount Vernon STEAM Academy.

Finally, Dr. Strickland wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month by mentioning the young scholars who were recognized during the celebration and received awards for their exemplary conduct and the way they treat others.
