Board of Education holds first work session of 2025-2026 school year

The Mount Vernon Board of Education held its first work session of the 2025-2026 school year on Tuesday. Work sessions were introduced by Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland to center Board meeting discussions on student achievement and important policy work rather than administrative tasks.

Work sessions will be held once a month, and will allow the Board members to stay connected to educational outcomes, utilize their expertise, and increase community confidence in the decision-making process of the District.

Key features of work sessions:

  • Data-Driven Focus: Regular review of student achievement metrics, graduation rates, and performance gaps
  • Strategic Planning: Long-term vision development and goal setting aligned with student outcomes
  • Policy Development: Thoughtful discussion of policies that directly impact learning
  • Professional Learning: Board development on educational best practices and governance
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Meaningful dialogue with educators, parents, and community members

Work sessions will include presentations regarding academics and operational supports, reviews of policies, and reviews of resolutions that will be voted on in business meetings. Resolutions are also being moved to a consent agenda, where Board members will vote once for a list of resolutions that have already been discussed.

At this week’s meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Administration Dr. Jamal Doggett presented information about school comprehensive educational plans and i-Ready data. After discussing both presentations and potential actions the District can take to improve, the Board began discussing resolutions and reviewing policies. Presentations and resolutions can be viewed on the District's BoardDocs website by clicking here.

Mount Vernon's Jewel Box

In the Jewel Box this week, we are highlighting the importance of early childhood education for Week of the Young Child. Prekindergarten is a vital stage in a student’s academic journey, and you can sign up to start your child on that journey in our schools. Pre-K 4 Early Registration and Pre-K 3 lottery will be open until June 19, 2026. You can also view Mount Vernon’s Jewel Box on our Facebook, Instagram or YouTube! #MtVernonShines

The image shows a sign above the entrance of a building, displaying a welcoming message to visitors. The sign has an arched design with decorative lettering, and the background appears to be a plain, light-colored wall.

The Prekindergarten Department held its Homework Celebration on Saturday at the Pelham Picture House! The celebration recognized 50 out of the 112 students who completed 90% or more of their homework from October to February. A lottery for 50 spaces was held to select students for the celebration. Families were so excited to watch the Mario Movie in a private local theater, and the Prekindergarten Department can't wait to host their final celebration in June with a viewing of Toy Story 2!
