The Mount Vernon City School District offers a creative opportunity for students entering grades 6 – 9 to excel academically and artistically. The Denzel Washington School of the Arts is designed for creative students interested in the arts. Students can apply from any Mount Vernon school and are admitted based on an audition in theatre, vocal music, dance, a visual arts portfolio, or playing a musical instrument in addition to a comprehensive application and an interview with the student and parent. The school will assist each student with discovering and nurturing their unique talent while also utilizing an arts framework to support success in academic classes. Students will transfer their creative skills to the classroom and build their cognitive framework and affective mindset to become strong readers, mathematicians, thinkers and learners.

Middle and high school auditions will be held at DWSA on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Let's Talk: Conversations with Dr. Strickland - Community Discussion at Graham School on Monday, June 2, 2025

Incoming Superintendent of Schools Dr. Demario Strickland is inviting the Mount Vernon Community to participate in his upcoming “Let’s Talk: Conversations with Dr. Strickland” community forums. The first forum will take place at Mount Vernon Honor Academy from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2025. These discussions will serve to build trust and relationships with the community for alignment and results.

Double Feature Movie Fundraiser at Grimes

The English as a New Language Department at Grimes School is hosting a Double Feature Movie Fundraiser! Join for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on Thursday, May 22, and Wicked on Friday, May 30. Doors open at 4:15 p.m., and movies start at 5:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. Tickets are $15 per person (cash only), including movies, a drink, chips and a hotdog. Pre-sale only—no tickets sold at the door. An adult must accompany all students. Please return the form with payment by Thursday, May 21.

The Mount Vernon Knights Youth Football Clinic will be held at Mount Vernon High School from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, through Friday, May 22. Join the Knights for a three-day football clinic with special guests from the New York Giants, college football players, and more! Open to grades 3-8, click here to register.
