Second graders at BTA show off their skills at science fair

Second graders at Benjamin Turner Academy proudly displayed their science projects for classmates and loved ones during their science fair on Thursday afternoon.

Nicole White, science teacher at BTA, gave students independence for their experiments, allowing them to choose what they would like to do for their project conducted at home.

Some students decided to go with classics such as the volcano experiment, which teaches students about chemical reactions and the diet coke and mentos experiment, a popular science project that replicates a geyser to show how physical reactions occur.

One scholar decided to focus his project on what popular cereal brands contain metal in their products, with the results shocking him. He found that three out of the four cereals he tested contained metals, with only Frosted Flakes having no metals.

Another student, Gloria Patterson, conducted an experiment with the help of her uncle to see which liquid would absorb a gummy bear the most.

Several administrators and teachers visited the science fair, including Art teacher Brad Maggart, who wrote words of encouragement on post-it notes for every student participating in the fair.

“It was so nice to come through today,” said Mr. Maggart. “I got to see a lot of clever and interesting thought processes. It was fun to see students work on something for a prolonged period of time where they could see it develop with their own eyes. I’m really proud of them.”
