Building Reorganization Information
Where will my child attend?
Students will receive an official notification of which school they will be placed in during the first week of June. These assignments apply only to students who are not in a special placement or program class assignment, such as special education. Those placements will be determined based on their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and the Special Education Department. The current placements of students who are transferring can be viewed below.
These placements for the 2025 - 2026 school year are subject to change based on student residency.
Reorganization Process
The Mount Vernon City School District is facing significant challenges due to declining enrollment and expenses continually exceeding revenue. This situation necessitates a shift from a PreK-8 educational model to another configuration. To ensure a successful reconfiguration, collaboration among district leadership, parents, trustees, administrators, teachers, community leaders, and students will be crucial. Input from all stakeholder groups will guide the development of this plan to ensure it meets the needs of our diverse community.
Approved Building Configuration:
● Four K-8 schools: Lincoln, Graham, Benjamin Turner Academy, Pennington
● Six K-6 schools: Edward Williams, Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer, Traphagen, Rebecca Turner Academy, Hamilton, Grimes
● Two 7-12 schools: Denzel Washington School of the Arts, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy
● One 9-12 school: Mount Vernon High School
● Six schools with pre-K classrooms: Graham, Pennington, Williams, Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer, Traphagen and Rebecca Turner Academy

Why is a reconfiguration needed?
The District began the building reorganization process after recognizing a need to utilize its buildings more efficiently, primarily due to a designation of significant fiscal stress by the State of New York. It was also clear that the K-8 model was not providing all grade levels with grade-appropriate academic, social and emotional experiences. With 13 middle schools, including Denzel Washington School of the Arts, and declining enrollment, an opportunity was available to reorganize the District’s buildings. The District formed the Reorganization Committee and began requesting input from stakeholders, seeing transparency and community engagement as a vital and necessary aspect of a successful transition.

Reorganization News
Dr. K. Veronica Smith, Acting Superintendent of Schools:
It is with great sorrow that I share that the Mount Vernon City School District will be laying off 84 certified staff members – including teachers, teaching assistants and administrators – and 40 civil service employees at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. I want to thank every one of them for the great work they have done for the District, and I am saddened that our financial situation required a reduction of workforce.
Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith presented the second State of the District Address to staff at their monthly staff meeting on Wednesday. She provided updates to employees about the developments in the school reconfiguration process and what they can expect in the next few months.

The Mount Vernon Board of Education approved a new school building configuration at a special meeting on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The District has been exploring a building reconfiguration due to statewide declining enrollment – which contributed to higher costs in the K-8 model – expensive building repairs and a designation of significant fiscal distress by New York State.
