Career and Technical Education
Mount Vernon City School District is committed to delivering rigorous, robust CTE programs, with multiple career pathways available for students after high school graduation. Our CTE department strives to provide learning experiences for our students through career awareness and skills needed for employment and/or postsecondary opportunities. There is an opportunity to apply academic concepts to real-world situations and prepare for industry-based assessments or certifications.
We have business and community partnerships that assist us with providing hands-on training and relevant career-readiness skills that lead to high-wage. Our CTE programs create educational opportunities dedicated to empowering students to enter the workforce, compete in a global marketplace, and offer the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced standing while still in high school. Students will gain technical and high-level academic skills, equipping them to be lifelong learners.
Work-Based Learning (WBL)
Work-based learning (WBL) provides students with experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills in a real-life working environment. WBL encompasses a diversity of arrangements, including apprenticeships, work placements, job shadowing, guest speakers, school-based enterprises, and field trips. These experiences help the student develop their employability in their chosen career path.
Transition Counseling at MVHS
A successful transition process is based on the student’s strengths, preferences, and interests, and requires collaboration between the school district, student, family, and community agencies. Transition planning and services are designed to prepare a student with a disability to achieve his or her post-secondary goals related to living, learning, and earning within the community.
Transition Counseling at MVHS is working with the 11th and 12th grade state-assessed special education students. Meetings consist of establishing skills and abilities for post-secondary endeavors. The counselor attends all annual reviews for the juniors and seniors and acts as the liaison for ACCES-VR. ACCES-VR assists individuals with disabilities to achieve and maintain employment and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation, and career development. The Transition Counselor also assists students with special needs in completing their process for Career Development Occupational Studies (CDOS) and compiles all necessary paperwork for the credential.
