Performing & Visual Arts ProgramsMasks

Mount Vernon City School District believes in the value and importance of the arts for all children. Performing and visual arts classes are included across all grades.  All students elect a performing or visual arts class commencing in kindergarten and continuing through 12th grade.

Beginning in September 2015, all students have the option of following a sequenced program in the performing and visual arts.  Classes will include: drama, vocal and instrumental music, dance, and visual arts.  Students also have opportunities to perform in plays, concerts and participate in visual arts showcases.

The Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program is open to students entering the 6th- 8th grade in 2016-2017.  The magnet program is open to creative students with a passion for dance, theatre, vocal music, instrumental music and the visual arts.  Students are admitted to the program based on an audition, and a student/family interview.

Upon acceptance into the program, students will follow a sequenced track in the performing and visual arts led by professionals in the arts industries and traditional New York State Certified teachers.  Opportunities for performances, visual arts showcases, master classes, and field trips will compliment learning in the arts.  The arts will also be integrated into the core subjects: ELA, math, science, and social studies to make stronger connections to academic achievement. Also, interwoven throughout the curriculum will be the inclusion and integration of technology.

Gifted and Talented Education

"The term ‘gifted and talented,” when used with respect to students, children, or youth, means students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in such areas as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities."
