The Social Studies Department at Mount Vernon High School is one of the largest departments in the building. Our teachers, who are the most experienced staff at MVHS, offer a variety of courses in a supportive environment designed to not only teach historical lessons but the idea of conscientious citizenship. Through studying Global History, United States History, Government and Economics and a variety of elective classes, students learn the story of humanity from ancient to modern times, while exploring personal narratives of politics, culture, and civilization.
Lessons are presented so that students can both learn the subject matter at hand while being given opportunities to relate it to their individual experiences and views about the evolving structure of government and societies. Students are encouraged to think critically about society through the lens of history. We also approach our lessons in holistic ways, imparting literacy, computation, and scientific exploration as part of our curriculum. Each of these components, is essential to a full understanding of modern day historical and political trends, and helps our students to leave the MVHS community with a wider understanding of how society functions, and their role as citizens of the United States and the world.
The Social Studies department is not only committed to the academic success of its students, but also the overall well-being of each student. Our goal is to enable each of our students to reach their full potential, and as part of this goal we have a variety of clubs and organizations designed to mentor students, including the United Nations Club, Student Government. Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Teachers, and the Explorers Club. Our teachers frequently serve as class advisors and are involved in multiple aspects of MVHS culture, including the sports programs, other academic clubs, and wider participation in the Mount Vernon community.
