In the face of this pandemic, New York State is facing a $15 billion budget shortfall. As the state contemplates, budget cuts, schools are increasingly being targeted for deep cuts that will impact our academic program like never before. The Mount Vernon City School District stands to lose 20% of our state aid, or about $15 million.
Our once struggling school system is in the midst of a transformation that has seen significant improvements in its instruction, teaching, and academic performance over the last seven years. These cuts will devastate our schools and our community.
I urge you to support bipartisan legislation to provide for $500 billion in federal assistance for state and local government, which will include our schools. This support is a critical component of the recovery of our nation from this pandemic.
The Covid-19 Pandemic has had a tremendous impact on us all. Perhaps though, it has taken its highest toll on our nation’s children. Uprooted from their daily routines for months, our students need the security and structure of our countries school systems. Our teachers and administrators and all school personnel provide for our students educational, social, and emotional needs. We often speak about opening our economy to protect “our way of life.” School is our children’s way of life. From their after-school programs to their art and all the other beautiful programs and supports we have in our schools to develop these students into healthy, engaged, and productive members of our community.
