Mount Vernon is the region's final district to reopen schools, but will it last?

Mount Vernon's youngest students returned to school buildings today after eight months at home, but their stay could be short. The urban school district with about 8,000 students is the last in the Lower Hudson Valley to open its doors, and Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton acknowledged that, with COVID-19 numbers rising, it might not be for long.

  • Public to Vote on $266M School Budget for 2022-23

    On June 21, Mount Vernon voters will decide on a $266,063,496 school district budget for the coming year. The budget calls for no increase – 0 percent – in the tax levy. The budget has been revised from the original draft voters did not approve on May 17. The revised budget was adopted May 23 by the Board of Education. It will be the seventh budget in the last nine years that has not called for an increase in the tax levy.

  • The Edwards Williams School is located in a culturally diverse section of Mount Vernon, New York. We offer an integrated curriculum that adheres to the high education standards of the New York State Department of Education. The classes encompass students from Pre-K through Grade Six. Our staff of over 60 is made of administrators, teachers, and specialists who are committed to meet the intellectual, academic, physical, cultural, social and emotional needs of our children.

     Educating the whole child is the most important goal at Edward Williams Elementary School. Our staff includes a full-time nurse, social worker, psychologist, speech therapist, and school counselor. We also have two Reading Specialists who use the pull-out and push-in teaching system. Creative teaching strategies are used to incorporate the arts and the community into the lives of all our children. All of our 500 children are embraced daily regardless of their backgrounds or living conditions.

     In addition to classroom instruction, intervention instruction is offered in all the academic areas. Many proven academic programs are offered including, resource, and special education classes. Academic intervention service programs are also available.

     We boast of an after-school program that serves our students in Grades 3-6. Currently this year, we have Academic Power Hour which provides enrichment academic support Monday - Wednesday.  Also, on Thursday and Friday, we have a  program in collaboration with the Empire Program that exposes the students to the world of STEAM with wonderful hands-on activities.
