Social Studies

Department Mission
The Mount Vernon City School District Social Studies Department empowers students to become informed, thoughtful, and engaged citizens. Through the study of history, geography, economics, government, and culture, students develop the knowledge, skills, and perspectives necessary to understand the past, navigate the present, and shape the future.
Social Studies K-6
The K-6 Social Studies program introduces students to the people, events, and ideas that have shaped communities, nations, and the world. Through inquiry-based learning, students explore geography, civics, economics, and history while developing an appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.
Students learn to ask questions, analyze information, and draw conclusions using age-appropriate primary and secondary sources. Instruction emphasizes literacy, discussion, collaboration, and problem-solving, helping students connect historical events and civic concepts to their own lives and communities. Through meaningful learning experiences, students build a foundation for responsible citizenship while developing the critical-thinking and communication skills needed for future success.
Social Studies 7-12
The 7-12 Social Studies program challenges students to think critically about historical and contemporary issues while preparing them for college, careers, and civic life. Students examine local, national, and global events through the lenses of history, geography, economics, political science, and culture.
Through the analysis of primary and secondary sources, research, writing, discussion, and evidence-based argumentation, students develop the skills necessary to evaluate multiple perspectives and support their ideas with credible evidence. Instruction encourages students to investigate complex questions, engage in civil discourse, and make connections between the past and present. As students progress through middle and high school, they become informed citizens who are prepared to participate thoughtfully in a diverse and democratic society.
