Teacher reading to students

Department Mission

The Library Media Program empowers students to become lifelong readers, critical thinkers, effective researchers, and responsible digital citizens. Through access to diverse resources, innovative technologies, and inquiry-based learning experiences, students develop the skills necessary to locate, evaluate, create, and communicate information in an ever-changing world. Library Media Specialists collaborate with classroom teachers to support literacy, research, and learning across all content areas.

Library and Related Resources

K-6 Library Media

The K-6 Library Media program fosters curiosity, creativity, and a love of reading while helping students develop foundational information and digital literacy skills. Students are introduced to diverse literature, digital resources, and research tools that support both personal interests and classroom learning. Promoting reading appreciation and exposure to a wide range of texts is a key component of the program

7-12 Library Media

The 7-12 Library Media program prepares students to be independent learners, informed researchers, and engaged citizens. Building upon foundational skills developed in elementary school, students learn to analyze information critically, evaluate sources for credibility and bias, conduct research, and communicate their findings effectively. The program emphasizes information literacy, digital literacy, and inquiry while supporting students' academic and personal growth.

Students in the Mount Vernon City School District Library Media Program learn to:

  • Develop a lifelong appreciation for reading and literature.

  • Locate, evaluate, and effectively use information in digital and print formats.

  • Utilize technology safely, responsibly, and effectively.

  • Conduct research and communicate ideas using credible evidence.

  • Analyze information critically and make informed decisions.
