English Language Arts

English Language Arts K-6 

The Mount Vernon City School District's K-6 English Language Arts program provides students with a strong foundation in literacy through evidence-based instruction aligned to the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards. Grounded in the Science of Reading, students develop essential skills in phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, speaking, and writing. 

Students engage with a diverse range of literary and informational texts that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of reading. Through collaborative discussions, independent reading, and authentic writing experiences, students learn to communicate effectively while building the skills necessary for success across all content areas. Instruction emphasizes literacy-rich learning environments, vocabulary development, writing across the curriculum, and the use of data to support student growth. 

English Language Arts 7-12 

The 7-12 English Language Arts program prepares students to become skilled readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators who are ready for college, careers, and civic life. Students analyze increasingly complex literary and informational texts, evaluate evidence, conduct research, and engage in meaningful discussions that strengthen their critical-thinking skills. 

Through a balanced approach to reading, writing, speaking, and listening, students develop proficiency in narrative, argumentative, and informational writing while learning to communicate effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences. Instruction encourages students to make connections across disciplines, think independently, and engage with diverse perspectives. Students are challenged to read closely, write purposefully, and use evidence to support their ideas in preparation for success beyond high school.
