Universal Pre-Kindergarten

The Mount Vernon City School District offers full-day universal pre-kindergarten to families in the district. The program offers an evidence-based curriculum taught by highly qualified Pre-K teachers and teaching assistants who are specially trained to build a nurturing classroom environment. Children will engage in growth and educational experiences, such as field trips, activities about families, digital communications, computer coding and iPad use. The robust curriculum includes reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Students will develop social and emotional skills while learning in whole groups and small groups.

Regular assessments of a child’s learning ensure that a child is on track for success in kindergarten.
Pre-K is currently available at the following locations: Mount Vernon High School, Parker School, Graham School, Pennington School, Holmes School, Williams School, Traphagen School, Mandela/Zollicoffer School and Columbus School.

Pre-kindergarten Curriculum

The Universal Prekindergarten Department has developed a comprehensive Curriculum Map which outlines the learning expectations, standards, and outcomes for all student enrolled in our Program. The Curriculum Map provides teachers, teaching assistants, support staff and administrators with detailed information to support the implementation of academic and social emotional learning. Although the document is quite detailed, there is room for teachers to differentiate based on student data. Families may peruse this document in order to gain an understanding of what happens daily in each classroom.
