Steven Salvatore, Music Teacher, William H. Holmes School

Mr. Salvatore joined the Mount Vernon City School District in 2016. Since beginning his tenure with the District, Mr. Salvatore has taught at the William H. Holmes School, where he serves as the music teacher for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade.

Mr. Salvatore received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y. before entering the workforce. He later decided to pursue a career in music education and received a master’s degree from Hunter College in New York City. Before joining the Mount Vernon City School District, he worked in admissions at a private beauty school in Manhattan.

“The decision to go back to school and change careers is something I haven’t regretted for a second,” said Salvatore. “I’ve spent eight and a half years furthering my own education and musical skillset, and I hope that my passion and dedication is clear to students in the classroom.”

As part of his curriculum, Mr. Salvatore introduces his students to all of the major band instruments. A musician himself, Mr. Salvatore plays the guitar, drums and piano.

“The best part about my job is not just seeing the excitement on my students faces as they explore the world of music, but it’s getting to serve as a role model for these kids as they progress through major development milestones,” he added. “During my first year as a teacher, I had a fifth-grade student who was disengaged and demonstrating disruptive behavior. By the end of the year, he was a drummer in the drumline at the sixth-grade graduation, a position that all the kids aim to hold. I was so proud to see his behavioral progression and passion for music develop over the course of the school year.”
